'BECOMING' A ROCK STAR INVOLVES MORE THAN JUST THE MUSIC AND THE MOVES FOR THREE DESTINY'S CHILD FANS

–Destiny's Child and MTV's Becoming Series Support AIDS Awareness and the Search for a Cure–

SAN FRANCISCO – Becoming a pop star is every teenager's dream and the inspiration behind MTV's hit documentary series "Becoming," where music fans experience exactly what it's like to become their favorite pop idols. For three Destiny's Child fans, that includes supporting HIV/AIDS research and awareness by wearing The Bracelet™, the fundraising symbol of the Until There's A Cure® foundation (http://www.until.org).
MTV's March 2nd episode of Becoming (http://www.mtv.com) will follow three Destiny's Child fans as they learn the moves, don the wardrobe, and apply the make-up that allows them to recreate a Destiny's Child music video. Along the way, they will enjoy the full backstage experience as they choose gifts from Palm, Sprint PCS, Until There's A Cure (UTAC) and other exclusive vendors while lounging between 'takes' in their Miramar Hotel suite.
The teenage fans will also learn that for Sony recording artists Destiny's Child, it's not all video sessions and platinum albums. Getting the word out about AIDS and helping discover a cure is a cause that both MTV and Destiny's Child are committed to. Destiny's Child wears Until There's A Cure Bracelets to support the eradication of the deadly disease, and the Destiny's Child fans featured in MTV's Becoming will also receive their very own Bracelets to show their support. UTAC sells The Bracelet to raise funds, which are granted to HIV/AIDS organizations throughout the U.S.
"MTV Becoming attracts 18-25 year olds, which is the exact age group that needs to understand the risk of AIDS," said Nick Lee, associate producer of MTV Becoming. "I was happy to see that wearing The Bracelet meant more to the Destiny's Child fans than a piece of jewelry. The girls wore The Bracelet proudly as a symbol of their support for a cure."
"We appreciate MTV, Destiny's Child and the 3 fans throwing their weight behind the HIV/AIDS cause," said Until There's A Cure Executive Director Jeff Cleary. "When 25% of the people in the U.S. don't even know they have HIV, that tells me that we have our work cut out for us. Educating people about HIV/AIDS is an ongoing effort."
According to Dr. Harold Jaffe, acting director of the National Center for HIV, Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Tuberculosis Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control, "Roughly half of all people living with HIV either don't know that they are infected, or they are not in care, or both."
Recent United Nations statistics show that almost 12 million children and young people are now living with HIV/AIDS worldwide. In the U.S. alone nearly 1,000,000 people are living with HIV, and a quarter of them do not know it. (Centers for Disease Control, 2/25/02)
